Streamlining glucose monitoring and insulin administration

Company Mission

Diabetic Health, Inc. (formerly Clinical Sensors, Inc.) develops coatings that mitigate the foreign body response (FBR) to continuous glucose monitoring sensors (CGM) and insulin infusion sets. These devices are used by millions of diabetes patients to control their blood glucose and reduce the likelihood of severe complications of diabetes. Because these devices act underneath the skin, they trigger the FBR, which limits long-term accuracy, performance and patient convenience.

Products

Our core products are nanoparticles that store and release nitric oxide, an endogenous, anti-inflammatory metabolite. These nanoparticles are dispersed in medical grade polymers and deposited onto device surfaces to form thin films.  The coated devices are then inserted into the patient where they release minute amounts of nitric oxide, protecting the device from the FBR and prolonging its functional lifetime.

Nitric oxide acts locally, so the device-protective effect is only delivered where and when it is needed.

Markets

Diabetes affects more than 30 million Americans and more than 350 million people worldwide. Diabetes patients increasingly rely on continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices to measure their glucose levels in real-time compared to intermittent fingerstick blood glucose testing. The additional information from the CGM device can improve blood glucose control and reduce the rate of diabetes-associated complications.

Recently, automated insulin delivery systems (also called artificial pancreas or hybrid closed loop systems) have achieved an additional improvement in diabetes control. Using CGMs and smart algorithms that adjust insulin delivery via pump, these systems have received FDA approval to reduce/eliminate hypoglycemia, improve time-in-range, and reduce hyperglycemia – especially overnight.

Because of their efficacy in controlling diabetes, CGMs and insulin pumps have gained significant market share over the past few years. One of the limitations for these inserted devices remains their short and mismatched lifetimes (7-14 days for the CGM sensors and 3 days for the insulin infusion sets) which is due to the FBR.
